Cheap & Clean Bungalows on Koh Phi Phi
I could never understand those who moan and groan over the dire prices of Koh Phi Phi. Did they hang around Ton Sai/Loh Dalum 100% of the time? They must have missed gems like the small bays on the lower east coast, not to mention the area around Long Beach (Haad Yao)!
TRUE ... there seemed to be no bargains in town - Ton Sai village. And all the Loh Dalum Bay bungalows where lost to the Tsunami. There are a few 'cheap rooms' ... normally a room above a shopfront and across from a disco and priced at 600plus. Or a tent for 250+? Well if you gotta be where the action is then those are the 'cheap places on Phi Phi'. No wonder newcomers with scant & scat knowledge of the island stagger off the ferry looking for a nice & cheap place are often shocked & unimpressed.
...
Walk over from Long Beach to Loh Modee beach on the dirt road heading uphill (you will need to cut thru the huts in the new Sea Gypsy Village). Total trip takes 15-20 minutes from Ton Sai.
Loh Modee itself is a very nice little beach with just one restaurant/bar. Heading north along the rocks from here (BUT NOT at high tide - for you will need a long tail boat) for about 4km are about half a dozen miniature beaches. All these alternative Ko Phi Phi getaways comprise a few small bungalow setups and a way laid back atmosphere.
To name a few of the alternative Ko Phi Phi getaways :: Ao Toh Koh Bungalows and PhiPhi Hill Bugalow.
Phi Phi Hill is located high on top of the eastern headland of the popular Long Beach. It has about 20 bungalows with "sunrise & sunset views". Most phi phi hill bungalows face towards Ko Jum and the mainland, or face the sunset, the best of which have similar stunning views.
Now here?s an secret. If you turn right on the first interesection on the 'rainforest track' instead of left you walk down you will come to a lovely little bay where a French woman and her Thai husband have established Poh?s bungalows. Hidden, serene, and a bargain.
Another good cheap place ... Long Beach Bungalows. Even in high season Long Beach Bungalows (on the east end of Long Beach) offer their backside bungalows for 300-400baht ... beats Zeavola ... just 23,000 baht per night (but that is with A/C and hot water).
